HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) has announced that its relief fund has received VNĐ527.8 billion (US$21.5 million) to support people affected by Typhoon Yagi.
The announcement was made on the VFF's official Facebook page on Thursday evening, along with a 12,028-page bank statement detailing the donations from the public to the organisation's Vietcombank account from September 1 to 10, 2024.
“We express our heartfelt gratitude to state departments, businesses, organisations and individuals both in the country and abroad for their donations to people affected by Typhoon Yagi through the Central Relief Mobilisation Committee,” the VFF wrote on its social media account.
The committee added that more updates will follow and the list of donations will be made public on mass media.
As of 7am on Friday, the number of people killed or missing due to Typhoon Yagi and its related landslides and floods has risen to 336.
Nearly 136,800 houses are damaged and over 67,600 others are flooded, while the disaster has also taken its toll on farms and livestock.
On Tuesday, following Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm’s call for support for those affected by Typhoon Yagi and its aftermath, a public campaign for relief assistance was launched by the VFF.
VFF Central Committee chairman Đỗ Văn Chiến has called for public employees, members of the armed forces and people receiving salary from the state budget to donate at least one day’s worth of their wages.
Youth union members, young people and households of average living standards are advised to give about VNĐ50,000-100,000 ($2-4) in donations.
The VFF Central Committee and its Central Relief Mobilisation Committee have promised transparency and pledge to use the donations effectively for the right purposes.
Their decision to make public the extensive bank statement detailing each donation has been widely praised.
The VFF Central Committee has also advised people to stay vigilant against unofficial websites or social media accounts posing as the VFF or its representatives to receive donations. The committee will work with authorities to handle fraudulent activities according to the laws.
